Proletären 0-4 Gothenburg Celtic FC
If ever a result defied the logic of a league table, then this was it. Although the Celtic came into this game on the back of a win, they still found themselves second from bottom, while Proletären sat in second place. However, that didn’t stop the Celtic from putting in a highly organised, commanding performance to record a superb 4-0 away win.Proletären had suffered defeat to the Celts earlier this season, but the Celtic players found themselves up against many unfamiliar faces this time round. The home side may have changed their personnel for the better, but they soon trailed the green and whites once again.
Robin Persson broke away down the left side, before sending a cross over that caused panic in the host’s defence. You can’t afford to hesitate when Johannes Haglund is around, and the big forward pounced on the loose ball to volley home from inside the penalty area.Rather than sit back on their lead and lose concentration, the Celtic looked determined and focused as Proletären began to put them under some pressure. However although they enjoyed a good share of the possession they were being out muscled by what was an extremely physical Celtic side. The referee was finding it hard to control the game, and the Proletäaren players were finding it hard to compete against such physicality. Despite their clever one-twos and step overs, they’d always be a covering player on hand for the visitors to comprehensively end the host’s attacks. And Celtic gave themselves a great chance of recording back-to-back wins for the first time this campaign when Adrian Kelly headed home a Simon Larsson corner. Kelly, who along with central midfield partner Larsson was popping up everywhere, peeled away from his marker before converting.
Often when 2-0 down a side can throw caution to the wind and launch a comeback, however Proletären’s players hadn’t taken going two goals down well. Heads dropped, and as the Celtic players continued to dominate every physical challenge, some of them began to look dis-interested. With Seb Caillou and Andreas Alvarsson forming a solid central defensive partnership, and Alvin Person and Barry White stifling any wide threat the hosts offered, the Celtic were in total command. Any doubts about the result were soon dispelled as the dangerous Haglund conjured up a fine moment of skill. With the ball dropping for the forward 30 yards out, there appeared to be little danger. However, Haglund struck a fine volley which flew past the host’s goalkeeper to make it 3-0.Proletären continued to be wasteful, while Celtic were in devastating form on the counter attack. And all memories of their appalling finishing from last week’s tie with AIF were well and truly banished, when Adrian Millerick combined with Haglund well, before finishing comfortably to give the visitors a fine 4-0 win.
Not very often can you look around a team and praise every single member of the squad, but this was one occasion when Garrett was able to do just that. His side had put in so much effort, defended from the front, and taken their chances when they inevitably came along. Although this result shows just what the Celtic could’ve done this season, it’s not time to dwell on the past, but to enjoy what really was a fine team performance. This result not only turned the league table on its head, it showed why the Celtic shouldn’t be under-estimated by any of their opponents.
